F
inally we come to the last leg of the trail:
Sgonico [44]. The first mention of the
village dates back to 1309, as “Swonich”, which
means bell tower in Slovenian and indicating
that at the time there was already a church and
a bell tower worthy of note. This is a state of
affairs that has persisted up to the present day
and the bell tower of the church of St. Michael
the Archangel is one of the tallest in the Karst
[45-48].
The town, right in themiddle of the plateau,
is now also known for the Carsiana Botanical
Garden [49-51], which is home tomore than
six hundred plant species representative of
the flora of the surrounding area, both Italian
and Slovenian. The scholars and enthusiasts
who created it in 1964, opted to set each plant
in its natural habitat with each species in its
environment, ranging fromamountain setting
to a lacustrine one, a sinkhole, woodland and
scrub, right through to the dry grasslands of
the landa carsica, a cave and other natural
environments influenced by karst phenomena
such as screes and limestone pavement.
Recently, to these habitats has been added a
section dedicated to aMediterranean garden,
created by the Province of Trieste with funding
from the SIGMA 2 Cross–border Project
funded under the Programme for Cross–border
Cooperation between Italy and Slovenia 2007–
2013, by the European Regional Development
Fund and national funds.
Carsiana, has been owned by the Province of
Trieste since 2002 and offers the opportunity
for guided tours for individuals, groups or school
classes, for which there are also educational
activities and educational fun for younger
children.
