B
efore entering the village, you will
surely notice the number of osmize and
agritourism farms welcoming visitors to
Samatorza. Peering through the stone portals
and into the gardens, your attention will
immediately be drawn to the bright red–and–
white chequered tablecloths on the tables, an
unmistakable sign that the property is open to
the public.
The old town – first mentioned in 1327 – is
the starting point for several walks in the
surrounding area, as are also shown on
illustrated panels at the centre of the village.
For those who want to come off the main trail
towards Monte San Leonardo, along the way,
you can visit a nature reserve, a watchpoint, a
hillfort, a cave and the remains of the church
of the same name.
Continuing along the Gemina path however,
you reach church of San Ulderico, dating back
to the fifteenth century and one of the oldest
in the Karst [35-36]. It is a church, its facade
decorated with a small rosette, surmounted
by a belfry with three bells. At the back of
the building, buried in the small cemetery, in
addition to local residents, is a Polish soldier
who died in 1917.
