T
he Grotta Azzurra (‘Blue Cave’ –
Zidaričeva pejca) opens on the side of a
large sinkhole, sloping slightly towards the
interior, on the bottom of which lie boulders
fallen from the ceiling and covering clay
deposits and lying close to the few concretions.
The cavity runs largely horizontally, being
just 46 metres deep but extending for
approximately 225 m [27-30].
The sinkhole and cave have been in use since
prehistoric times, and the bottom deposits
were found to hold remains of prehistoric
animals, tools and pottery, silent witnesses
to human footsteps since Palaeolithic times,
although the most important remains date back
to the subsequent phases, the Mesolithic and
Neolithic. Even in the Bronze and Iron Ages
people continued to take refuge in the caves,
although at this stage a Karst hillfort with a
double circle of walls was built nearby.
With the help of a torch and being careful not
to slip, you can explore the cavity.
